The Department of German and Slavic Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time two-year term position at the rank of Instructor II in the area of Polish Language and Culture with a specialization in post-1945 twentieth and twenty-first-century Polish culture and history. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in oral history and Polish-Manitoban migration. The successful candidate must have an M.A. in Polish Studies or History.

The ideal candidate must have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching Polish language on all levels and a variety of Polish culture courses on the undergraduate level. A minimum of five or more years of teaching in a University or equivalent position is required. Furthermore, the successful candidate must demonstrate considerable experience in outreach activities / liaising with the Polish diaspora, and travel abroad / exchange programing to Poland. Experience in curriculum development and experiential learning is also required.

The successful candidate is expected to teach Polish language courses as well as culture courses conducted in English at the undergraduate level as part of the Polish minor program. They will also contribute to the Minor, Major and Honours programs in Central and East European Studies. Native or near-native fluency in the Polish and the English languages is essential. The duties include 21 credit hours a year of teaching in various modes of delivery and service to the Department, Faculty, University, and the community. The successful candidate will coordinate and further develop the Polish program, function as student advisor for the program, maintain and update the Polish lab program in the Language Centre, actively engage in community outreach with Manitoba’s strong Polish-Canadian community, as well as develop and run study-abroad courses and programs. All members in the Department of German and Slavic Studies are expected to work closely as a team.

The starting salary will reflect the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2025.

The term position is made possible in part through the Polish Endowment Fund established by Manitoba’s Canadian-Polish community.
