The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

Job Purpose

Under the close supervision of the Researcher, the Research Technician will execute day-to-day operations in the field, greenhouse, and environment-controlled chambers and perform pathogen inoculation and evaluation works with data collection.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute operations related to handling bacterial pathogens and other microorganisms for inoculation and disease evaluation under greenhouse and field conditions.
  • Harvesting, processing, and storage of samples and seeds
  • Assist in sampling activities relevant to microbiome-related set-ups.
  • Provide assistance to the crossing works [hybridization] needed by the project.
  • Provide assistance to the phenotyping activities in the field including leaf sampling based on standard protocols.
  • Collecting data for phenological, resource allocation, and physiological traits under the field, greenhouse, and controlled environment conditions.
  • Operate vehicle to transport plant samples, materials, and equipment
  • Assistance to the supervisor during any field tours conducted for students, visiting scientists, farmers, etc.
  • Support scholars, students, researchers and scientists in establishing field experiments
  • Preparation and set up of all greenhouse and walk-in chamber experiments and also provide assistance to field activities (e.g. seeding, monitoring, pulling, transplanting, harvesting and threshing, watering, bagging, weeding, rouging of off-types, fertilizer application, and insect monitoring).
  • Monitoring and organizing all samples, materials, and equipments kept in the greenhouse and storage areas.
  • Monitoring and maintenance of fields and set-ups relevant to microbiome experiments.
  • Perform any other relevant duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time

Qualifications:

  • High school graduate with at least 2 years of relevant work experience

Skills Required:

Mandatory:

  • Has basic knowledge of MS Office programs such as Word and Excel or related software
