Job Description
The Hockey Research & Development Department provides information and support to all areas of hockey operations in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization including management, coaching, scouting, player development, and sports science. To support these efforts, we are hiring a Developer to help us build and support our data platform.
The Developer’s primary responsibility will be to extend, maintain, and support the use of TML’s data platform. Additionally, the Developer will analyze data to discover insights, communicate those insights to others in the organization, and contribute to various data-related projects across the organization.
Position Type: Contract Until June 2026
- Designing, developing, and maintaining data infrastructure and tools as part of TML’s data platform, including:
- Pipelines for collecting, processing, and storing data including game events, player tracking data, scouting reports, video, and more.
- Tools to enable others in the organization to explore statistics and information
- Automated tests.
- Contributing to hockey research, including:
- Designing algorithms to derive useful information from large datasets
- Analyzing hockey data and communicating insights to colleagues
- Collaborating with analysts on hockey research projects
- Supporting non-developer staff to maximize their benefit from the platform
- Other hockey operations duties as assigned
Qualifications

- Python programming proficiency.
- Experience building web applications using a full-stack framework (e.g., Django, Rails, Laravel, ASP.NET)
- Demonstrated experience working with large datasets (i.e., data extraction and processing, algorithm design, data infrastructure design and management).
- Degree in a technical field (e.g., computer science, science, engineering) or equivalent experience in a technical role.
- Experience collaborating on software projects within a team.
- Experience using distributed version control.
- Understanding of modern hockey statistics and analysis.
- Programming experience using sports datasets.
- Experience designing and optimizing relational databases.
- Experience using machine learning techniques to build predictive models.
- Experience using JavaScript libraries to build interactive web applications and data visualization (e.g., React, D3).
- Experience designing and supporting cloud infrastructure.
- Will need to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Ability to travel to Toronto with some regularity is required.
