The Department of Electrical and Software Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of Photonic Devices with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025. Example areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Quantum-optical devices
Photonic integrated circuits
Optoelectronic devices
Novel optical materials
This position will benefit from close interaction with Quantum City, an innovation hub formed between the University, Government of Alberta, and Mphasis, which is creating an ecosystem of infrastructure, talent, programs, and commercialization for quantum technologies. As part of this initiative, applicants will have access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication equipment in Quantum City’s qLab, comprising 500 m2 of class 100 cleanroom space and 120 m2 a class 1000/10000.
Candidates with an earned doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, or a closely related discipline, or those who will have earned such a doctoral degree by the anticipated start date are invited to apply. Applicants should have demonstrated the potential for excellence in research and teaching.
Position Requirements
The successful candidates will demonstrate:
A record of high-quality research and publications
The potential to establish an externally funded research program, and to achieve international recognition within five years
The alignment between their research interests and the university, provincial and national strategies in quantum technologies
The ability to attract and develop excellent trainees, students, and future researchers
Ability to teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses related to the topics in the position description above
Excellent written and oral communication skills
A commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Engineering
Candidates should be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). Experience working in industry or on industrial projects is considered an asset.
