Job Summary:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides essential support to adults with disabilities, ensuring a safe, supportive, and respectful environment. The DSP works closely with individuals to promote independence, assist with daily activities, and support their emotional and physical well-being. This role requires the ability to manage stressful situations, calmly de-escalate challenging behaviors, and assist with a variety of personal care, housekeeping, and charting duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Personal Care and Assistance: Provide support with daily living tasks, including hygiene, meal preparation, dressing, mobility assistance, and other personal care activities as needed.
  • Behavioral Support: Work with individuals to manage stress, calm down patients in emotional distress, and implement behavior management strategies as directed by the treatment plan.
  • Charting and Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely records of patient activities, behaviors, and any incidents. Document care provided, medication administration (Med Pass), and other relevant observations in accordance with organizational and regulatory guidelines.
  • Medication Administration: Assist with administering medications as per prescribed instructions, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with medical protocols.
  • Housekeeping and Cleaning: Perform light housekeeping duties, such as cleaning common areas, ensuring a clean, safe, and pleasant living environment for residents.
  • Client Engagement: Foster positive relationships with clients, ensuring they feel valued, respected, and supported. Encourage and promote independence and participation in daily activities.
  • Collaboration: Work as part of a team, collaborating with other professionals, including nurses, therapists, and family members, to ensure the well-being and care of individuals.
  • Crisis Management: Respond appropriately in emergency situations and work to de-escalate stressful or challenging behaviors, providing support to individuals in maintaining emotional regulation.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (additional certifications in relevant fields preferred).
  • Prior experience working with adults with disabilities, especially in a residential or healthcare setting, is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with clients, team members, and families.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with calmness, patience, and professionalism.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to lift and assist clients as necessary and perform light housekeeping duties.
  • Certification in CPR and First Aid, or the ability to obtain upon hire.
  • Knowledge of basic medication administration and charting.

Working Conditions:

  • This position may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on client needs.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of settings including residential homes, group homes, or other care facilities.
  • The role involves frequent physical activity, including standing, walking, and lifting.
  • Ability to manage emotional and behavioral crises, using de-escalation techniques and maintaining a supportive and calming presence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with medication management or certified in medication administration.
  • Knowledge of mental health, behavioral disorders, or intellectual disabilities.
  • Familiarity with behavior support plans and the ability to follow protocols to de-escalate situations.
