Summary
The Accountant will support NYPA’s Controller’s business unit, reporting into the Senior Manager Plant & Cost Accounting, and will perform professional accounting work at NYPA relating to the compilation, treatment, and analysis of financial data leading to preparation of financial reports and cost of service schedules.
The Accountant will maintain accounting records and prepare financial statements in accordance with US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and provisions of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). The Accountant will also assist with the classification of cost between Capital and O&M, along with cataloging capital costs within the appropriate FERC system of accounts and NYPA Policy.
Valuable skills include Excel, ERP (preferably SAP), strong communication and collaboration skills, an interest in learning, and the ability to pivot as needed due to business needs.

Responsibilities
Participate and assist with the month-end ERP financial system close process (settlements of capital and O&M codes, benefit distribution, and allocation of costs in financial system).
Update assigned account analysis in reconciliation system.
Prepare and input recurring and non-recurring semi complex journal entries. Assist with the monthly posting of accruable invoices (O&M and Capital) from the open invoice report.
Processing daily cash transactions, including generating monthly debt and investment transaction reports and postings.
Prepare monthly schedules relating to investments, interest income and interest expense.
Compile data for and prepare regularly scheduled and special accounting reports. Keep complete and accurate account analyses and supporting work papers.
Prepares schedules for both internal and external auditors for areas of responsibility.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Ability to work with computerized financial systems and use of PC software systems.
Excellent oral and written skills are required for dealing with customers, staff from various departments, various consultants, and external accounting firms.
Ability to analyze and verify financial data.
Ability to establish daily work priorities and perform recurring tasks for monthly closings and account analysis.
Proactive in achieving goals and is responsible for making decisions on recurring day-to-day transactions.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
Minimum 2 years related experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
Approximately 10% within NY State.
