Join Our Team as an Assistant General Manager at HI USA NYC!

Our flagship New York City hostel is seeking an Assistant General Manager to oversee day-to-day operations, including the front desk, back office, housekeeping, maintenance, and food & beverage support. 

This is no ordinary job—it’s a dynamic role where you’ll tackle exciting challenges, lead a dedicated team, and collaborate with the General Manager to shape the success of the hostel. Must have or be willing to obtain New York Fire Life Safety Certifications (W-07, F-03, C-92, F-53).

Position Details:

Pay: 80-95k, DOE 

Type: Salaried, benefit-eligible

Responsibilities:

  • Uphold the organization’s mission and values through operational oversight and team/guest interactions.
  • Lead with strong, positive leadership that fosters an inclusive and supportive team culture.
  • Manage supply inventories while ensuring cost control and adherence to budgets.
  • Supervise front office and housekeeping operations, providing direction and support.
  • Coach and mentor department heads, assist with shift coverage as needed, and facilitate staff training.
  • Ensure a safe and secure environment for guests and staff by overseeing safety and security functions.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures, checklists, and training manuals as needed.
  • Assign tasks and monitor staff performance to ensure compliance with hostel policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and respond to online reviews, identifying improvement opportunities and implementing corrective measures.
  • Handle all personnel matters, including hiring, onboarding, training, time tracking, performance reviews, feedback, and disciplinary actions.
  • Collaborate with the GM and Maintenance to manage preventive maintenance programs and enhance hostel safety initiatives.
  • Assist the GM in ensuring compliance with city regulations and proactively address citations or inspections.
  • Support and coordinate with other departments to advance hostel activities and HI USA’s mission.
  • Participate in the Manager on Duty program.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills/Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of management experience and/or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).
  • Must have or be willing to obtain New York Fire Life Safety Certifications (W-07, F-03, C-92, F-53)
  • Hospitality operations experience preferred; hostel experience a plus.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Spanish communication skills preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with hospitality front desk/reservation systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic math, accounting, and staff supervision experience.
  • Ability to work independently and handle crises effectively.
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred (training available).

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms 
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, or crouch 
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds 
  • Vision abilities required: close, peripheral, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus 
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
