McKenzie Health Sciences Centre of the University of Alberta Hospitals.Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and has been internationally recognized among the world’s top 50 medical schools. The University has an annual budget in excess of $1.9 billion and attracts significant external funding.The Department of Critical Care Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 8 Full-Time and 7 Special-Continuing Academic Faculty and over 50 Clinical Faculty, across two teaching and three community Alberta Health Services’ operated hospitals (covering ~ 130 adult ICU beds in 7 ICUs) in the city of Edmonton. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College training program in Critical Care Medicine and oversees the ICU training of numerous rotating specialist programs. Research in the Department spans a wide spectrum from basic science and translational work through health services research and clinical trials across all aspects of the practice of Critical Care Medicine.The City of Edmonton, with a growing metro population of ~ 1.57 million, is the cosmopolitan capital of Alberta known as “The City of Festivals”. For further details about our vibrant city, please visit .Position SummaryThe successful candidate will have an academic appointment with the University of Alberta at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will have protected time for research and education. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead innovative and collaborative investigator-initiated research and support, develop and broaden the education portfolio in the Department and across the Edmonton Zone. The successful candidate will have separately secured a concomitant clinical Intensivist position with Alberta Health Services.Duties

  • Build capacity as clinician-scientist and independent investigator;
  • Lead department and faculty capacity building in health economic evaluation, to achieve national/international recognition;
  • Lead applications for peer-reviewed Tri-Council funding (e.g., CIHR);
  • Supervise multi-level learners, including graduate students and post-doctoral students;
  • Lead the development of a health research methodology curriculum for DCCM learners (e.g., academic half-day activities; journal clubs);
  • Lead the development of a “clinical trialist pathway” training program for DCCM learners;
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of innovation of the CCUS curriculum;
  • Liaison with UME to facilitate medical student rotations/electives in the DCCM.

QualificationsThe successful candidate will be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC or FRCSC, possess a specialist certificate or equivalent in Critical Care Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).In addition, formal training in health research methods (i.e., Master of Science or greater), advanced expertise in health economic evaluation, a proven early track record in academic achieved demonstrated by funding success and publications (i.e., achieving at least
25 peer-reviewed publications) and an emerging national recognition as an independent investigator in critical care medicine.The successful candidate will further have demonstrated a proven achievement in education across multi-level learners, demonstrated by curriculum development, teaching awards, and learner supervision.At the University of Alberta, we are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible hiring process for all candidates.
