The Department of Civil Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary is pleased to invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor.
The Department invites applications from civil engineering researchers advancing AI-driven innovations in this field. We seek candidates at the forefront of Research and Development of AI applications in one or more of the following areas:
Structural Engineering: AI in structural design and analysis; AI-driven infrastructure health monitoring.
Materials Engineering: AI-driven development of Civil Engineering materials; enhancing durability and carbon neutrality.
Construction & Project Management: AI applications in Building Information Modeling (BIM), and digital twins.
Ideal candidates will contribute to cutting-edge research and real-world applications of AI in Civil Engineering while collaborating with other faculty members.
We seek an energetic and dynamic colleague who will be able to positively contribute to the Department of Civil Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering.
The successful candidate must have completed a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline and demonstrated excellence or clear promise of excellence in research, including evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates independent research potential leading to peer-assessed publications and the securing of external research funding. The candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the Civil Engineering program, the Digital Engineering minor, and/or other digital engineering courses in the Schulich School of Engineering. In addition, the candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and develop collaborative projects with other faculty members from the University as well as participate in other educational and professional activities including administrative activities of the Department, School and University.
The anticipated start date: is July 1, 2025 or a mutually agreed upon date.
The successful applicant will align with the University of Calgary’s Ahead of Tomorrow strategic vision and support its academic and research priorities. They will be an emerging scholar with an original, creative, innovative, and forward-looking research program, with demonstrated excellence. This will be evidenced by high-quality scholarly output and research impact that demonstrates the potential for independent research leading to peer-evaluated publications, securing of external research funding, active engagement with industry, and supervision of graduate students. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate an ability to work as part of our highly collaborative research teams and preferably have experience in municipal, provincial, industrial and/or Indigenous community collaborative research projects.
They will actively contribute to teaching, curriculum development, graduate student supervision and mentoring, and are expected to provide service in support of the Department, School, University and Profession. To be eligible for consideration, candidates must hold a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (or equivalent Engineering degree) and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline, specializing in one of the aforementioned areas; have a strong research track record; and provide evidence of excellence in teaching. Relevant industrial experience is an asset. Candidates should have strong oral and written English communication skills. All candidates should be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
