Assistant Professor of Medical Sciences (in Medicine), Tenure Track

The Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor Medical Sciences (in Medicine). We seek a physician-scientist who will develop a high-impact, independent research program in kidney disease and related biology, with a clear trajectory toward sustained extramural funding and national recognition.

This is a research-intensive position with substantial protected time to support the establishment of an independent R01-funded laboratory or translational research program. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative academic environment with access to strong institutional research infrastructure, core facilities, and multidisciplinary partners across the medical center and university.

The candidate must have demonstrated research acumen and have a history of obtaining independent funding. Ideal candidates will also possess superior teaching and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to expanding the research mission of the division and will dedicate the majority of their time to developing independent research projects and working with collaborating scientists.

The duties of this position include:

Candidates should have strong research training and, commensurate with rank, leadership experience in biomedical research, as well as a clinical background in the area of general nephrology.  Candidates should have a documented record of scholarly achievement. The specific duties are as follows:

  • Build an independent, externally funded research program in nephrology aligned with a clear pathway to R01 (or equivalent) support.
  • Develop an innovative and cohesive research portfolio (basic or translational research) that advances understanding and treatment of kidney disease.
  • Lead and participate in interdisciplinary collaborations and contribute to programmatic research initiatives.
  • Teach medical students, doctoral students, and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Mentor trainees and junior team members in research, including project design, execution, analysis, and dissemination.
  • Contribute to divisional conferences, research seminars, and educational activities related to kidney biology and disease.
  • Participate in service to the Division, Department, and University appropriate to rank, with service expectations structured to support the candidate’s career goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MD, PhD or MD/PhD degree
  • Advanced research training (e.g., postdoctoral fellowship or equivalent)
  • Evidence of strong research productivity (e.g., peer-reviewed publications, scientific rigor, and a compelling research vision)
  • Demonstrated potential to secure independent extramural funding and develop a nationally visible research program

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Track record of innovation in kidney biology or translational nephrology
  • Prior or current career development, foundation, or NIH funding
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary projects and mentoring trainees in research
  • Board eligibility or certification in Nephrology and eligibility for NYS medical license for MD candidates

Salary Range: $200,000.00 – $300,000.00
