The Faculty of Arts, Department of Art and Art History invites applications for a one-year limited term position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) of Visual Studies. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025.

We are seeking an artist-scholar who will have the primary responsibility of teaching studio art courses at the undergraduate level; the successful applicant is expected to teach seven courses per year (typically three courses in fall and winter, one in spring). As part of these responsibilities, the incumbent will be expected to participate in the development of courses within the department, be involved in extra-curricular events on campus and within the broader community with the goal to sustain a vibrant program. Mentorship of students and service to the department, faculty, and University is also expected.

The preferred applicant will hold an MFA or other relevant graduate-level credential.
Demonstrated ability to teach across a range of media including introductory courses in Drawing (ART 241) and 2D Art (ART 231), and Professional Development in Art (ART 400/402) are required. Creative-research expertise related to issues of Democracy, Justice and Sustainability, and the ability to teach in these areas (“Art and Social Change” and “Sustainable Art Practice”), would be an asset.

The incumbent will demonstrate teaching excellence by presenting an outstanding record of teaching effectiveness, evidence of pedagogical innovation, experience with developing undergraduate curricula, and mentoring of students. A strong record of curated/juried exhibitions and/or community-based artistic projects, artistic grants, and peer-reviewed residencies is required. The successful applicant must demonstrate respectful engagement with Indigenous ways of knowing, and decolonizing, anti-racist, and inclusive frameworks.
