The position is located in the Research Department (RESEARCH) of the ILO, which conducts research on labour, employment and social protection issues to contribute to policy formulation by ILO constituents at national and global levels. The main purpose of the Department is to assess major trends – including new technologies, demographic patterns, environmental and climate change, the evolving role of finance and emerging patterns in development and globalization – in relation to the World of Work. Core research issues also include the assessment of “what works”, in terms of and decent work outcomes and pursuit of social justice. RESEARCH produces flagship publications such as the annual World Employment and Social Outlook, as well as studies that examine the inter-linkages between economic growth and social equity.

The position will contribute to the Department’s work by supporting the development and coordination of communications outreach for the Research Department via intranet, internet, email and social media accounts (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter). The communication and outreach materials and posts will be planned and delivered in a systematic and strategic manner based on the Research knowledge Tracking System of the Department which ensures a regular stream of content which is both informative and engaging. 

The position reports to the Deputy Director of RESEARCH.

 Duties:

  • Provide technical and editorial support to staff members in RESEARCH in developing and disseminating information materials. Edit, write or rewrite text to support the dissemination of articles, working papers, newsletters, flagship reports or other information materials as required.
  •  Support the management team and senior research staff in implementing RESEARCH’s communication and dissemination strategy in collaboration with DCOMM. 
  • Assist with the production of audio/video projects by conducting research, acquiring copyright and other clearances, and arranging for editing and audio mixing in close collaboration with DCOMM. Collect and compile information for dissemination.
  • .In coordination with the relevant stakeholders within and outside RESEARCH, edit, upload and package digital content for online dissemination on the ILO’s intranet, public website and social media channels.
  • Actively participate in the organization of webinars/virtual events, research seminars, brownbag lunches, conferences and meetings, including via the ILO LIVE broadcast platform.
  • Assist in organizing and delivering training and outreach to Department staff on communications and dissemination.
  • .Refine the Department’s automated research knowledge platform, databases and mailing lists, monthly news letter, as well as preparing monthly  reports relating to communication and dissemination.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.
  • These specific duties are aligned with the relevant ILO generic job description, which includes the following generic duties:

Duties:

  • Research and develop materials for specific information topics and/or outputs such as audio/video productions. Collect and compile information for dissemination.
  • Draft news releases, correspondence or other information publications, and assist with the distribution of information materials.
  • Prepare briefing materials for senior communication and public information specialists prior to their appearance at interviews, conferences and briefings. Participate in the organization of seminars, conferences and meetings.
  • Maintain lines of communication and working relationships with representatives of the media, NGOs and/or other groups to develop an understanding of information requirements.
  • Edit, write or rewrite articles, newsletters or other information materials as required.
  • Assist with the production of audio/video projects by conducting research, acquiring copyright and other clearances, and arranging for editing and audio mixing. Participate in the development and maintenance of web-sites. 

Required qualifications:

Education:

  • First-level university degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations, liberal arts or other relevant discipline. 

Experience:

  • Three years of professional experience in public information or related fields of work. 

Languages:

  • Excellent command of one working language (English, French, Spanish) of the Organization and a working knowledge of a second working language of the Organization.  Knowledge of a third working language of the Organization would be an advantage.
