The Senior Research Analyst will strengthen the research effort on Enhancing Evidence-based Marine Policy through the Utilization of Ocean Accounts (particularly on blue carbon ecosystem) in collaboration with other relevant research team within the organization. The key responsibilities include conducting research activities (planning, executing and reporting), coordinating research delivery, report writing, knowledge and communications product development and dissemination, and ensuring smooth partnership with UNSW; and universities in the pilot locations, for the upscaling the utilization of the tool. 

This position will be based in Jakarta with office-flex working arrangement and travel requirement as assigned. Reporting directly to the Plastic Waste and Ocean Manager with close collaboration and coordination to Research and Data Integrity Manager for research output. Research Management, Knowledge and Publication :

  • Lead and implement the research activities as stipulated in the research project workplan aligned with WRI’s research protocol and regulation.
  • Represent WRI in coordination with UNSW as the research partner
  • Conduct literature reviews on the implementation of ocean accounting based on the framework developed by Global Ocean Account Partnership (GOAP), and explore potential integration with Social Accounting and GESI.
  • Coordinate, design and conduct collaborative research activities collection through various instruments, among others: interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and other qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Coordinate the development and drafting of the progress reports, and working documents of the knowledge products, i.e. digital tool for ocean accounts.
  • Provide spatial analysis of coastal areas particularly blue carbon ecosystems
  • Supervise the software development team members in ensuring the digital tool for ocean account.
  • Collaborate with the team to develop knowledge products and communication materials, such as reports, briefs, data products, tools, and blogs, to enhance the visibility of WRI Indonesia’s efforts.
  • Coordinate and strategize the dissemination activities.

Engagements and Fundraising:

  • Lead the engagement with the partners institutions at National and Sub-National level to ensure strong buy-in of the tool and recommendations from the research project.
  • Contribute in proposal writing for new research activities contributing in strengthening ocean account in Indonesia.
  • Presenting research approach and findings on a selected forum.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in discipline related to marine science, fisheries, biology, bioeconomics, geography, or other relevant field. PhD is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 (five) years of professional experience as researcher in the area of marine and coastal ecosystem or any related fields preferably on the blue carbon ecosystem.  
  • Strong familiarity with the Indonesian marine conservation or marine spatial planning, including relevant policies and stakeholders management.
  • Strong familiarity with the concept and utilization of environmental economics, preferably ocean accounts.
  • Ability to contribute to designing a robust approach to collecting, cleaning and analyzing data and consider impacts on people, climate, and nature, as appropriate.
  • Highly experienced in leading literature reviews, collect, evaluate, and synthesize the evidence.
  • Highly experienced in writing technical analyses and draft section of knowledge product in a clear logical flow.
  • Business proficiency in English and Bahasa Indonesia for both verbal and written communications
  • Strong ability in communicating research approaches and findings effectively to technical and non-technical audience, both internally and externally.
  • A detail-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team from various background in a fast-paced environment, while effectively managing competing priorities and outcomes qualities.
  • Willingness to build networks and engage with various actors to ensure smooth implementation of the research.
  • Ability and willingness to travel when needed.
  • Legally able to work in Indonesia
