R&D Data & Quantitative Sciences

The Head of R&D Data and Quantitative Sciences reports directly to the President of R&D and sits on the R&D Management leadership teams.
The R&D Data and Quantitative Sciences organization influences senior leadership and stakeholders to advance Takeda’s R&D pipeline. Central to Takeda’s R&D operating model are the pillars of Data & Quantitative Sciences, which are leveraged to support the imperative of becoming a data-driven and scientifically and quantitatively disciplined rigorous organization. This focus enhances the speed and success of R&D growth and strengthens competitiveness. R&D Data & Quantitative Sciences encompasses several global functions, including Quantitative Clinical Pharmacology, Statistics & Quantitative Sciences, Programming, Global Evidence Outcomes, Business Operations, and Patient Safety & Pharmacovigilance, and the AI Center.
The role is highly cross-functional with broad and complex accountabilities and responsibilities, ensuring its impact and value across various departments. It carries high visibility at the senior executive level, significantly impacting the business’s future direction. A clear vision is crucial for the vital role that data plays in enabling R&D to realize its full potential, emphasizing strategic development and innovation.
This role requires a deep understanding of Takeda’s business to balance the fast-paced world of innovation and flawless execution. Must be able to navigate the complexity of R&D and cross-collaborate with across R&D and across the enterprise. Presenting to the Board of Directors and sharing future-ready plans for R&D are key responsibilities, as is providing solutions to enhance business investments and drive growth.

The Head of R&D Data & Quantitative Sciences will lead the overall strategy and execution of all quantitative sciences. Their remit will be to create a world-class quantitative science discipline that brings the most creative and innovative capabilities to our project teams and ultimately to patients.
The leader is responsible for enhancing the capabilities within and across each of these groups internally and through innovative and entrepreneurial partnerships and build new capabilities as necessary to meet the dynamic needs of our rapidly evolving healthcare environment.
Drive the execution of the R&D portfolio, delivering expectations that enhance and complement business investments through proven methodologies that support agility and rigor in regulated environments.
The Data & Quantitative Sciences groups will serve as hub and center of excellence for all quantitative and data science applications in R&D.
Specific objectives include:
Elevating the importance of data driven decision making to the top of the organization while simultaneously increasing innovation
Driving analytical strategies and processes related to clinical development, non-clinical safety and efficacy, post-marketing surveillance, pharmacoepidemiologic research and pharmaceutical development.
Establishing the value proposition of Takeda products through the development of global outcomes, real world evidence and epidemiologic research and data strategies
Advancing Takeda’s pharmacovigilance and patient safety to ensure an industry-leading approach and focus.
Partnering with the Therapeutic Area Units and cross-function leaders to ensure the strategy addresses the evolving needs of the organization and provides the appropriate level of enablement to drug development.
Promote the strategic use of data into decision making throughout the R&D organization and function as a catalyst within executive leadership regarding the use of data to support portfolio, program and project level decision making (ranging from discovery choices, marketing obligations and patient safety)
Drive the application of advanced/innovative approaches and techniques including predictive, prescriptive, and real-time analytics as well as novel devices and artificial intelligence.
Oversee the development of a globally aligned statistical strategy and safety signal detection approach for all Takeda clinical development and marketed product programs and projects.
Provide patient knowledge and medical and analytical expertise to ensure the success of regulatory agency interactions and submissions including working closely with TAUs to obtain approvals of NDAs, sNDAs and MAAs.
Ensure that Takeda exceeds industry standards related to statistical and epidemiologic design as well as overall analysis and reporting including maintaining a proactive approach to emerging requirements, new analytics opportunities, Takeda’s overall strategic objectives.
Ensure rigorous assessment of real-world data to assess the incidence, prevalence, natural history of diseases and real-world outcomes for Takeda’s R&D assets. Oversee the development and implementation of global outcomes and epidemiology research strategies to establish the value proposition for Takeda’s products from early development through commercialization.
Drives the Patient Safety and Pharmacovigilance Organization to ensure rigorous standards are upheld for all Takeda’s drugs in R&D and Commercialized globally.
Skills and qualifications:
The Head, R&D Data & Quantitative Sciences has extensive experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, specifically across the R&D continuum. They have demonstrated experience in integrating the diverse internal and external expertise needed to bring new medicines to patients to address the external regulatory, compliance, legal and reputational elements of our business. They have both business, management, and operational expertise. This role requires strong leadership skills as well as the ability to approach situations from a creative point of view.
Bachelor’s degree in a technical/scientific field such as Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Engineering; graduate degree preferred (MD/PhD/MSc).
Extensive biopharma industry experience in roles of progressive responsibility, including significant previous leadership roles in drug development or research.
Demonstrated strong analytical, project management, presentation and influencing skills.
Advanced scientific training/experience in the pharmaceutical industry
Ability to apply clinical understanding in the interpretation of analytic data (Strong combination of clinical and analytical expertise, business acumen, and technologically savvy).
Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and teambuilding skills, strong leadership, and people/talent management to lead and motivate highly skilled and varied resources.
Experience in the health science industry, macro trends, and how health science companies operate across the value chain.
Previous experience in understanding of how modern technologies can be applied and sourced to add business value in regulated industries with a record of measurable success.
Previous experience leading a medium to large organization and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders is a plus.
Proven record of leading and driving business process transformation and organizational culture change as well as delivering on programs with complex business deliverables.
Record of successful leadership, management, and development of large, multi-disciplinary globally dispersed teams. Strong judge of talent with the ability to make tough talent decisions.

U.S. Base Salary Range:
$372,800.00 – $512,600.00
The estimated salary range reflects an anticipated range for this position. The actual base salary offered may depend on a variety of factors, including the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, specific and unique skills, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and the location in which the applicant lives and/or from which they will be performing the job. The actual base salary offered will be in accordance with state or local minimum wage requirements for the job location.
U.S. based employees may be eligible for short-term and/ or long-term incentives. U.S. based employees may be eligible to participate in medical, dental, vision insurance, a 401(k) plan and company match, short-term and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance, a tuition reimbursement program, paid volunteer time off, company holidays, and well-being benefits, among others.
