We’re looking for an analytical and detail-oriented controller to join our team. You will be responsible for overseeing, directing, and administering all financial operations of the hotel. You will support our continuing effort to deliver outstanding guest service and financial profitability. As a member of the Executive Committee, we need a highly professional individual who can lead and manage the hotel’s financial activities with the utmost integrity. This is an on-site position located in San Francisco, CA. This is an exempt position that reports to the General Manager.

What You’ll Do

  • Maintain professional discretion and confidentiality, never discussing Accounting or Departmental Human Resources matters without prior knowledge of the General Manager.
  • Directly manage accounting staff including, but not limited to hiring, training, scheduling, supporting, disciplining and terminating employees directly accountable to this position.
  • Establish and enforce policies and procedures for all hotel Accounting, Payroll and Night Audit functions.
  • Control cash flow generated by Accounts Payable and Receivable, including authorization payments, and ensuring the timely collection of all bills due.
  • Review transmittals and journal entries to ensure accuracy and proper authorization.
  • Review and update Accounting related control procedures in all departments, and report to the Managing Director any procedure snot being adhered to.
  • Train staff on all SOPs and ensure there is understanding and compliance.
  • Review and approve all documentation of Accounting procedures, including credit card reports; dailies; responses to credit card inquiries; chargeback; journal entries and preliminary financial statements.
  • Ensure accurate and efficient completion of month-end closing procedures, including preparing month-end journal entries; and generating reports and commentary.
  • Prepare monthly Flash Reports for the Corporate Office.
  • Support the General Manager in the development of annual departmental budgets, including the annual budget for the Accounting Department.
  • Continuously monitor and control departmental expenditures to ensure meeting operational standards while maintaining annual budget.
  • Follow all specifications to perform routine month-end accounting procedures, including scheduling and assisting with inventories; preparing journal entries; generating reports for corporate, and reconciling accounts to the General Ledger.
  • Ensure compliance with specified cash handling procedures.
  • Complete special projects, as requested by management or other department heads, meeting all pre-determined goals for quality and completion.
  • Immediately report all suspicious occurrences and hazardous conditions.
  • Focus on safety and the following of safe work practices by yourself and those under your direction. Including compliance with company safety standards, and state and local regulations that pertain to your department.
  • Ensure departmental safety training for all new Accounting, Payroll and Night Audit employees, before they begin to work.
  • Conduct regular departmental operations meetings, including monthly safety meetings.
  • Implement and maintain backup and emergency procedures to always ensure integrity of programs and data.
  • Source and recommend training initiatives for hotel staff.
  • Influence and collaborate with hotel operations and shared services teams (sales, marketing, revenue management, people & culture), taking ownership for desired results through partnership.

What You Bring To The Table

  • 5 years’ experience in hotel accounting or related field, including at least one year experience in supervisory position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s degree or CPA certification a plus).
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards and property management software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Team-first mindset – a desire to collaborate and share information.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  • Human Resources experience is a plus.
