  • Training and Competency: online and in-person learning
  • Inspection and Maintenance: Equipment and space inspection and certification
  • Hazard Management advice and support
  • Regulatory compliance advice and support
  • Incident Management: reporting and investigation

HSE has expertise in chemical, biological, radiological, and physical safety; hazardous materials and waste management; HSE regulatory compliance and consulting, field research safety; contractor safety; and environmental protection.PositionThis opportunity will support the rollout of the U of A’s new Laboratory Closeout Project. The role will include working with the project team, research groups coordinate and complete laboratory closeouts within the Department of Biochemistry/Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. This is a 4-month term position.Duties

  • Review and/or development of hazard assessments.
  • Prepare hazardous waste for disposal.
  • Disposal and/or transfer of equipment and hazardous materials, disposal of non-hazardous waste.
  • Communication with HSE, PIs and Departmental administration.
  • Assist laboratory personnel with reconciling current inventories.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in, or having completed, a bachelor’s degree in science or technology.
  • Previous experience in an academic research environment.
  • 1-2 years experience working in academic laboratories is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Adaptable, agile, and technologically savvy; advanced capability with Google Applications and ability to learn chemical inventory and waste software programs.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and high levels of accuracy.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.
