Legal counsel on contract to cover a maternity leave, starting immediately until July 31, 2026.
Your role
The position is based in Toronto or Montreal.
As Legal Counsel, Media Law, you will advise all media lines (TV, radio and digital platforms) on program content, particularly regarding defamation and publication bans, to protect CBC/Radio-Canada from lawsuits. You will be part of the media law team that works closely with news departments in producing journalism, placing you in the centre of action.
You will also retain and work with external legal counsel on media law litigation involving the Corporation. You may also be asked to research and draft detailed legal opinions.
In addition, as a key member of Legal Services, you will advise CBC/Radio-Canada business areas and work with senior executives on sensitive, high-profile matters. You must have excellent writing, negotiation, and communication skills. You must also be creative and adaptable to changing demands in order to provide timely advice to news departments.
What you bring?
Member of Quebec Bar (if based in Montreal) or Ontario Bar (if based in Toronto) for at least five years.
Experience in a relevant area of law (media law, defamation, litigation, copyright) an asset.
Adept at using computer programs.
Excellent command of communication in English and French (spoken and written).
Excellent interpersonal skills: tact and diplomacy.
Efficiency, sound judgment and solid communication skills.
Discretion to perform all duties with complete confidentiality.
Must be available for flexible hours as required.
