And we’re looking for a leader and strategist to challenge and guide the CBC News teams of Quebec in this transformation.In Quebec, CBC has a mandate to reflect and serve the English-speaking population across the province. People trust the journalism of the local CBC teams and count on its programming for relevant information and context and a deep understanding of the communities that make up the region. Through CBC radio and TV programs, podcasts and a steady stream of high-quality digital storytelling, the public broadcaster is central to people’s daily lives.We are looking for a Managing Editor to lead and inspire the journalists of CBC Quebec to build to even greater heights. The ideal candidate knows the importance of covering breaking news and getting it right and is equally passionate about serving original and enterprise journalism that has impact, so that CBC is talking about what matters most to the public we serve.The journalists of CBC Quebec work at stations in Montreal, Sherbrooke and Quebec City. They will report directly to the Managing Editor. The ideal candidate is fully committed to building meaningful relationships with new audiences in the diverse English-speaking communities of Quebec.The Managing Editor will inspire, mentor, support and develop staff. This person will work with a team that is motivated by excellence, strong communication, inclusion, shared goals, accountability and results.The Managing Editor will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met in the reporting and programming of CBC Quebec and that our stories and our programs are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, and compelling. You will be required to operate and manage with little direct oversight. You’re accountable for the smooth operation of daily programming and long-term goals for the region.Reporting to the Senior Managing Director of CBC Atlantic and Quebec, the Managing Editor will work with other leaders of the region and the rest of the country to further the vision, mandate and strategy of CBC News, Current Affairs and Local and the strategic goals of CBC.Tasks:

  • Provides strategically driven editorial leadership daily for all programs and projects.
  • Responsible for application of the CBC’s journalistic standards and practices.
  • Develops and executes strategy against goals to strengthen the local journalism and deepen community connections.
  • Creates a positive and inclusive work culture through feedback, coaching and development of staff.
  • Builds and maintains strong connections between the local team and colleagues across the country to the benefit of the CBC News, Current Affairs and Local division as a whole.
  • Builds and maintains strong connections with colleagues at French Services.
  • Works with Managing Editors and other leaders in the region and the country to achieve strategic goals.
  • Networks to build relationships with community leaders and groups.
  • Ensures that all CBC policies and procedures are followed.
  • Answers complaints to the CBC Ombudsman.
  • Works with finance staff to ensure costs are tracked and budgets are followed.
  • Hires and supports the training and development of all journalism staff.
  • Works closely with the legal team when required.

Experience required:

  • Minimum of 7 years’ related leadership experience, including experience leading a newsroom or current affairs programming teams.
  • A track record of guiding complex journalistic decision making.
  • Experience with the application of journalistic standards and practices in a daily newsroom setting.
  • An ongoing interest in and understanding of media trends as they apply to a multiplatform journalistic organization.
  • Proven ability to make decisions rapidly and frequently within tight deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be clear, concise, and precise on journalistic and programming matters.
  • Experience leading a team during major breaking news events.
  • Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.
  • Experience hiring and supporting new staff in a journalism setting.
  • Advanced leadership skills are required to inspire and direct creative, self-motivated staff.
  • Experience working with digital, video and or audio storytelling is essential.
  • Ability to read and communicate in French is required.
  • Critical thinking and the ability to make decisions rapidly under pressure without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of an Indigenous language or other language is considered an asset.
