Job Title: Practicum Advisor (I/S), Year 2, EDBE 8P75
The Faculty of Education is deeply committed to both the process and goal of social justice, including critical inquiry, inclusive practices, and equitable participation. We prioritize approaches, leadership and curricula that make central oppression and marginalization in school and society.
Overview: The Practicum Advisor (PA) position is largely focused on connecting the learning in EDBE 8P74 Professional Collaborative Communities, to the field of practice by supporting the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners. Practicum Advisors (PA), working closely with PIs will implement curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. PAs are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to unconscious biases, and encourage inclusivity. Year 2 PIs are expected to also serve as PAs.
Duties:
- Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in Block 2 Practicum (EDBE 8P75) with reference to the Program Handbook;
- Work with and respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner;
- Work collegially and collaboratively with other practicum advisors/instructors including attending team meetings and debriefings;
- Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures as outlined in the Program Handbook;
- Collaborate with Placement Officer in arranging for/setting up placements;
- Virtually evaluate teacher candidates at various school sites during the block 2 practicum and submit grades;
- Communicate on email to support teacher candidates in Block 3 (EDBE 8P76);
- Attend beginning of program meeting, sessional instructor meetings and relevant professional development.
- Use of a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications;
- Complete the mandatory Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class (about 1 hour).
Qualifications
- Normally a minimum of 5 years teaching experience;
- A Master’s degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;
- Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;
- Demonstrates currency in educational theory and pedagogy;
- Knowledge about social justice and equity through an anti-racist lens;
- Preference may be given to applicants with experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;
- Competency in using technology for course management purposes; or
- A combination of education and experience matching and/or exceeding the above
- Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers, a Valid Driver’s License, and pass a police vulnerable sector check (PVSC).
- All Practicum Advisors must be available for the entire teaching block duration.
