Through meticulous planning and coordination, constant innovation, and a keen attention to detail, IU Catering staff use fresh, seasonal ingredients to deliver spectacular client-driven culinary experiences from piping hot coffee and in-house baked pastries for a meeting of 20 to a sumptuous 5-course meal and elegant custom cake for a wedding of 200¿on campus and throughout Bloomington. 

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Interacts with the host of the event to ensure the event is exceeding their expectations.
  • Oversees event setup, servers during the event, and breakdown of events.
  • Assists with inventory management for alcohol.
  • Attends pre-event meetings, and executes events according to the BEO.
  • Acts as a liaison between the host, kitchen, and servers.

General Responsibilities

  • Assists with setting up and tearing down all venues, while communicating event expectations and ensuring customer service standards are demonstrated on the job.
  • Works to store and deliver packages and equipment.
  • Answers staff and customer questions, troubleshoots basic issues, and provides guidance on urgent matters.
  • Covers bar event shifts, bartender breaks, and register operations as needed.
  • Acts as back up for supervisor in his/her absence scheduling and training hourly employees on work activities. 
  • Trains employees in work and safety procedures and departmental policies. May provide guidance to lower-level catering positions.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years of experience in food service

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Food Safety (ServSafe) certification within 180 days from date or hire
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University
  • Proof of Server Permit Application Upon Date of Hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This position requires tasks typically associated with back-of-the-house food service work. It involves periods of both sedentary work and times of frequent movement about the workspace. This role involves moving up to 15 to 25 pounds. Using commercial kitchen equipment and tools, moving supplies and effective communication skills are necessary. This role involves handling meat and plant-based food products as well as a variety of ingredients that may include some or all of the top 9 allergens in the preparation of menu items and during the course of cleaning and ware-washing tasks. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$15.75 per hour

Work Hours

Shift times vary according to business needs.

Management reserves the right to adjust work hours to accommodate special meals and events.
