Exploring the World of STEM Summer Program – Positions for student monitors
Are you looking for part-time work this summer?
Would an opportunity to share your enthusiasm for STEM with STEM-curious youth interest you?
The School of Continuing Studies (SCS) is looking for monitors to guide and animate outings on and off campus during our three-week Exploring the World of STEM summer program. The ideal candidates will have a keen interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) fields, enjoy engaging with teens, and are familiar with Montreal.
Pay: $18 / hour (up to 60 hours total)
Dates: July 7th through July 25th, 2025 (3 weeks)
Times:
Program Overview: For three weeks in July, we will be hosting a group of 80-100 senior high school students from Mexico and other parts of the world who are curious about different educational and career possibilities in STEM fields. Each day from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm, the students will experience a variety of STEM related workshops, labs, and guest speakers. After 3:30 pm, it is time to break into smaller groups, share daily highlights and discover the local culture and sites with their monitors.
Monitor Responsibilities: The role of the monitor is an important one. As a monitor, you will be assigned a group of approximately 10-15 students with whom you will meet four times a week. Your role will be as a guide, leading your group in local outings, cultural discovery activities, and other fun extra-curricular activities. A very important component of the monitor role is to ensure that students understand and follow activity protocols as well as behave in a way that is respectful to others and their environment. An equally important component of the role is to encourage engagement and connection with what they are learning each day and over the course of their stay with us. You will ensure, as well, that they are safe while in your care.
Qualifications and Desired Attributes/Assets: Be a student or recent graduate, preferably from McGill University; speak English fluently and have a working knowledge of French; have previous experience working as a monitor (an asset), particularly with teens (an asset). In addition, the ideal candidate will be comfortable with and enthusiastic about engaging with students and animating group activities.
