Job Description Summary

The swine group at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team at the Penn Vet Swine Teaching and Research Center located on the New Bolton Center campus in Kennett Square, PA. This animal care specialist position provides a unique opportunity for someone interested in gaining valuable experience in swine production.

The specialist will be trained to carry out daily farm activities related to the daily care of pigs in the various stages of production, including: farrowing, nurser, grow/finish and adult breeding herd as well as participate in farm biosecurity, animal assessments and appropriate treatments. Depending upon interest, the animal care specialist may also have the possibility to contribute to our teaching and research initiatives. 

Job Description

Responsibilities include:

Daily farm activities related to the daily care of pigs in the various stages of production, including:

• Farrowing
• Nursery
• Grow/finish and adult breeding herd
• Farm biosecurity, animal assessments, and appropriate treatments.
• May also have the possibility to contribute to our teaching and research initiatives
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must either be a graduate of a four-year Animal Science Bachelors program or a graduate of an AVMA accredited veterinary technician or technology program (eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a CVT). 

WORKING CONDITIONS: High dust, dirt, and grease environment 

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Typically standing or walking, typically bending, crouching, stooping. Frequent lifting 25 lbs. or more
