The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Calgary invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Engineering Design, Manufacturing, and Mechatronics. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2025, or at a mutually agreed-upon date.
We are seeking candidates who will complement and strengthen our research and teaching expertise in design, manufacturing, and mechatronics. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
Core manufacturing processes such as machining, forming, casting, and joining, as well as process modeling, optimization, and integration.
Advanced manufacturing technologies, including automation, robotics, and sensing systems integrated with traditional processes, cyber-physical systems, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).
Engineering design methodologies, with applications in product development, system optimization, and sustainable design.
Instrumentation and control systems, with relevance to manufacturing and automated systems, mechatronics, and quality control.
The successful candidates will be emerging leaders with a passion for creative intellectual endeavors. This will be evidenced by a strong record of high-quality publications and research impact, the potential to establish an independent and internationally recognized research program, and the ability to attract external funding and foster local and international collaborations. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to providing an excellent training environment for graduate students and research personnel.
Successful candidates will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses in core areas of mechanical and manufacturing engineering, particularly in manufacturing processes and engineering design. They will also contribute to curriculum development, program innovation, and mentorship of students at all levels.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA). This will be reflected in their genuine understanding of the challenges and barriers faced by underrepresented groups, their commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive academic environment, and their ability to incorporate EDIA principles into research, teaching, and service activities.
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must hold a Doctoral degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering or a closely related discipline by the start date or shortly after. Relevant industrial and teaching experience and evidence of transdisciplinary research in related areas are considered a major asset. Candidates are expected to have strong oral and written English communication skills. All candidates must be eligible for registration as a professional engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA).
