Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for an early career, tenure track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2025, subject to final budget approval.

This position is open only to candidates who meet the Tri-Agency definition of early career researcher (ECR). Specifically, an ECR is a researcher within five years from the date of their first research-related appointment, minus eligible delays in research, where: research related appointments are defined as those where the individual has the autonomy to conduct research independently; and all eligible leaves (for example, maternity, parental, medical, bereavement) are credited as twice the amount of time taken, and professional leaves (such as, training, sabbatical, administrative) are not credited. The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research, and service duties while maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial work environment across all activities. As a member of the Place and Infrastructure Thematic Research Stream in the Migrant Integration in Mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides (BD) Research Program, the successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative, externally funded research program that applies cutting-edge analytical techniques to produce high-quality, implementable results in broad thematic areas.

These areas include, but are not limited to, sustainable multimodal transportation, shared mobility and public transit, mobility analytics, climate change adaption in transportation, cyber-physical mobility, and equitable and inclusive transportation. In particular, the department is looking for exceptional candidates with proven expertise in leveraging innovative/emerging technologies, econometric techniques, game theory, statistical methods, operations research, simulation, and data science/engineering to address key issues in such thematic areas.

It is expected that the successful candidate will be actively involved in the existing and new collaborative projects involving researchers in the Bridging Divides research program, within TMU and other national and international universities. Therefore, the candidate must demonstrate the potential for intersectoral and interdisciplinary research connecting transportation engineering with migration studies, urban planning, sustainability, public health, environment, and climate change. Teaching duties will entail delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses, supervision of undergraduate capstone and graduate students, and curriculum development that can support the candidate’s research agenda as well as the Department’s needs. Registration or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer in Ontario is mandatory.

Candidates must hold or are close to finishing a doctoral degree in Transportation Engineering or a closely related field. In addition, a strong application will have addressed the following:

the candidate’s ability to conduct strong emerging scholarly research that is current, innovative and impactful as evidenced by, but not limited to,peer-reviewed publications, working papers, public policy contributions, presentations at academic conferences, professional contributions, research grants, research related awards and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;
the candidate’s potential for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum and suitability for teaching in the graduate program, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, any experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, examples of best practices in pedagogy, including effective use of classroom technology and any experience with experiential learning, sample syllabi, strong teaching evaluations, teaching awards, and other relevant achievements in teaching;
the candidate’s commitment to the University’s values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching, and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population; and,
the candidate’s ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the Department of Civil Engineering, and the University through collegial service activities.

Department of Civil Engineering
The Department of Civil Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate (Master’s and Doctoral) programs to approximately 1,000 students of diverse backgrounds. Our graduate programs (Ph.D., M.A.Sc. and M.Eng.) offer extensive courses and research opportunities in environmental, geomatics, structural, and transportation engineering. The Department also provides limited courses in the areas of specialization in geotechnical engineering, and construction and infrastructure management.
