About the Role:
The Visual Arts Facilities Coordinator manages the Visual Arts Department (VISA) Art Stores, facilitates the effective functioning of the art studios and workshops, provides specialized health and safety training to faculty, staff, and students, and provides research assistance to faculty.
The Visual Arts Facilities Coordinator will:
- Manage all aspects of the operation of the Art Stores in alignment with institutional and departmental policy;
- Research and source affordable professional quality supplies and materials to meet the needs of the visual art department’s programming and course offerings;
- Maintain inventory, set pricing, and manage accounting and reporting for Art Stores;
- Manage all aspects of supply ordering and distribution (placing orders, corresponding with suppliers, scheduling deliveries, receiving deliveries, unpacking supplies, stocking shelves, building supply kits for courses, distributing supplies into studios);
- Manage the effective day-to-day functioning and safety of the art studios, workshops, and equipment;
- Oversee the organization, storage, and maintenance of equipment, furniture, and supplies in the studios and workshops;
- Liaise with Health and Safety on the development of all safety-related training and processes (including Material Safety Data Sheets documentation, and accident reporting);
- Ensure appropriate personal protective equipment is available for use and first aid kits are fully stocked in studios and workshops;
- Oversee and manage the student assistants, including directing tasks, supervising performance, coaching, mentoring and scheduling;
- Recruit, hire, mentor, coach, manage, and schedule life-models based on departmental needs.
Please note this position requires availability for on-call support outside of regular business hours depending on operational needs.
Key Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts and related experience working in an academic environment, teaching or providing workshops to students;
- A valid G class driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract;
- Experience with safe handling and proper disposal of chemicals;
- Experience with budgeting, accounting, inventory management, systems, data tracking, and reporting;
- Basic knowledge of art installation practices, wall repair, art handling, and life-model techniques, strategies, and studio etiquette;
- Superior organizational skills, ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines;
- Familiarity with a wide range of art supplies, tools, equipment, and their use;
- Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Excel;
- Knowledge of studio safety and best practices, including health and safety regulations, requirements, and systems (WHIMIS, MSDS);
- Ability to work in an environment that requires frequent movement of equipment, tools, furniture, and supplies up to 1000 pounds over substantial distances including standing, walking, bending, and pushing/pulling carts;
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships and to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals;
- Exceptional communication skills (listening, oral, and written);
- Ability to mentor and coach students, student assistants, and life-models;
- Ability to work in an environment with distractions that requires the ability to multi-task and prioritize key tasks;
- Advanced organizational skills and the ability to troubleshoot and problem-solve.
Preferred or Asset Skills:
- Master’s degree in Fine Arts (MFA)
Salary and Total Rewards:
- Job Grade J, Salary Scale ($52,920-$90,720);
- Target Hiring Range: $52,920-$74,500;
This is a permanent position that includes:
