The College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for multiple tenured, full-time research faculty positions within the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health in Flint, Michigan.

Backed by a $25 million gift from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, MSU offers large or fully guaranteed salary coverage for researchers relocating substantial external funding portfolios. Highly accomplished senior faculty may also qualify for the C. S. Mott Endowed Professor of Public Health named professorship.

About the Department and Community
Founded in 2011 through a unique proposal from Flint-area hospitals and community members, the department operates on an unprecedented community-partnered model. As the first academic department to be co-developed and co-governed in partnership with the communities it serves, local citizens actively shape governance, focus areas, and serve on faculty hiring committees.

Flint is a historic hub for community-based participatory research. This community-partnered approach has driven the Department’s external funding (over $500M since beginning in 2015) and real-world impact. Featured current projects include two NIH-funded Centers (focused on maternal health equity and suicide prevention) and Rx Kids, the nation’s first universal cash prescription program for infants and expectant mothers.

Multiple Research-Intensive Associate/Full Professor Tenure System Positions
MSU is seeking exceptional mid- to advanced-career investigators with innovative research portfolios and a history of external funding to join our energetic, mission-driven Department. Positions are 80-90% research effort. Public health issues of high importance originally identified by the Flint community include health equity; social determinants of health (violence, safety, the built environment, education, employment); behavioral health (mental health and substance use); healthy behaviors (including screening/prevention); and chronic disease. Recent events have also highlighted maternal and child health and environmental justice. Primary research methodologies are action-oriented: implementation science (including sustainment), dissemination and communication, intervention and services research, and research to change health policy.

Multiple Associate/Full Professor Tenure System Biostatistician Positions
MSU is seeking one or more biostatisticians to lead and collaborate on federally funded projects and to contribute to transparent and accessible communication of findings to the Flint community and beyond. Positions are 80-90% research effort. Areas of expected expertise include but are not limited to health economics, policy analysis, implementation science, geospatial analysis, biostatistics and research design, analysis of interventions (e.g., difference-in-differences), AI analytics, agent-based modeling, Bayesian modeling, causal inference, and measure development. We are seeking exceptional mid-to advanced-career investigators with strong external funding portfolios to fulfill this role while also pursuing their own research interests.

1855 Professorship
One tenured full-time research position at the Associate or Full Professor level

This 1855 Professorship offers a unique opportunity for an established researcher who seeks to continue their highly impactful, community-engaged health equity research to drive change in areas both relevant to Flint and widely applicable. These include increasing equity in social determinants of health, behavioral health, healthy behaviors, chronic disease, maternal-child health, and environmental justice, among others.

This open position is supported by the MSU Provost’s 1855 Professorships initiative that seeks to elevate the academic quality and reputation at MSU. The new faculty member will be expected to contribute to the multidisciplinary “Science for Community Impact” cluster of researchers who conduct translational science with marginalized communities using community-engaged, equity-focused partnerships.
